Well, hugely behind schedule but novel two is finished.
I enjoyed this a lot. The style of the first-person narrative is great. It comes across at first as pretty bleak but in thinking about it I think the message of the novel is a hugely positive one and I can’t help but find myself agreeing with the protagonist even if my world view isn’t quite as heavily absurdist. Which is probably the point.
I recommend this book!

The top comment sums it up:
“Brief summary of the above: “I do not understand science and feel vaguely intimidated by it. Rather than attempt to rectify this, I justify my intimidation by claiming that science is somehow dangerous or immoral in extremely vague and non-specific ways. Since I am incapable of understanding scientific explanations, I disapprove when science explains something that had previously been mystical, as I can no longer spout nonsense about it without being contradicted.”

Hey guys! Check out this new blog where I and my friend and housemate Stephen are attempting to read 25 books we’ve never read before over the course of 2012.
Stephen here,
We are reading the list in reverse order to each other. So I’m beginning with “The Name of the Rose” and Ciarán with “Lolita”.
Without further ado -
1. The Name of the Rose - Umberto Eco

Three or Four
Day 7: Wahoog, it’s been a week. In this one I wanted to elaborate on an idea I love to hear- when phrases of 3/4 are set against 4/4 so they match up every 12 bars. I wanted to explore this more but I got distracted by how much fun I was having just improvising on guitar, so I recorded one take of that for good measure.
